Mapping Race in Medieval Iberia

Activity: Talk typesInvited presentation

Description

This lecture will explore how early Spanish Christians, who lived in an Arabic-speaking Muslim milieu, conceived of race and history in ways that were very different from that of intellectuals in the rest of Latin Europe during this period. Such notions of the origins and nature of the ‘races’ of the earth and their characteristics became part of the later medieval Spanish intellectual tradition.
