Activity: Talk typesSubmitted presentation or panel

Description

Many people who are employed in the helping professions (often in traditionally female-dominated careers such as nursing, social work, and teaching) contend with performing emotional labor, defined by Hochschild (2003) as "requir[ing] one to induce or suppress feeling in order to sustain the outward countenance that produces the proper state of mind in others,” while in the workplace. Librarianship is no different, as evidenced by the RUSA Guidelines for Behavioral Performance of Reference and Information Services Providers, which state that ”Librarians are expected to exhibit behaviors that ‘serve to welcome the patrons and to place them at ease…’ (RUSA 2004). This presentation seeks to synthesize existing literature from the fields of librarianship, management, and psychology; provides a space for attendees to share stories and knowledge; and adds to the small, but growing, body of research on emotional labor and librarianship.
