Dr. Cho is the founding Director of the Korean program at the University of Minnesota. After completing his BA and MA at Korea University, Dr. Cho came to the University of Minnesota, where he earned his Ph.D. in Linguistics. For the last 20 years, he has led the University of Minnesota’s effort to establish its Korean program from scratch. He subsequently developed a strong interest in sociolinguistics, North Korean dialects, and language policies. He has been involved in various North Korea related linguistic projects through the National Foreign Language Center.
He currently teaches ‘Language and Society of the Two Koreas’, which introduces the growing divide of the past 70 years between North and South Korea in the areas of language, society, and culture. His course has been broadcasted to other big ten schools such as MSU, U. Maryland, U. Michigan, Rutgers U, and U. Wisconsin for past several years.
