Research interests

My research has been concerned with the lost opportunities of the early modern period. Before such concepts as civil society, human rights, progress, the self-possessed individual, and any fast distinction among different kinds of knowledges, the archives of pre-modern France suggest efforts to think about related questions, efforts that often did not lead to our modern understanding of human nature.
