Evaluation of sustained-release buprenorphine for induction of opioid tolerance

Project: Research project

Project Details

Layman's description

Long-term use of opioids to treat pain can create a need for the person to take increasing doses of medication to get the same pain relief. We suspect that giving long-acting buprenorphine (an opioid) to animals creates the same problem instead of providing long-acting pain relief.

Key findings

Mice and rats develop acute tolerance to the analgesic effects of sustained-release buprenorphine. Currently evaluating other species.
