N2 - Gene therapy holds much promise as a novel means with which to improve the treatment of a wide range of orthopedic conditions, both acquired and genetic. Considerable preclinical progress has been made in the areas of traumatology, sports medicine, and spine, and two phase I human clinical trials are in progress for the gene therapy of arthritis. Much progress can be expected in the next few years that should enhance considerably the orthopedic armamentarium.
