Abstract
Application of the local characteristic method based on a high-order accurate scheme to the equations of an inviscid gas flow is considered. The approach makes it possible to use flux limiters that are independent of the flow characteristics. This precludes the development of rarefaction waves and results in a minor smoothing effect on the jumps in shock waves and contact discontinuities.
