Abstract
A causal model of the career commitment, organizational commitment, career withdrawal intention, and job withdrawal intention of pharmacists was developed through an extensive review of the literature on professionals in organizations. A mail questionnaire sent to a random sample of pharmacists licensed in the United States yielded an overall response rate of 66 percent. Analysis of a subset of the respondents found that intention to withdraw from the profession was most strongly affected by career commitment, while intention to withdraw from the job was most strongly affected by organizational commitment. Personal/background variables such as position in the organization and professional involvement were found to have significant direct and indirect effects. Support was provided for the proposed model in which career commitment preceded organizational commitment, but other models may also be appropriate. Further development and investigation of the current model will provide insight into the career and organizational behaviors of pharmacists.
