Abstract

A membrane experiment for investigating gas separation which is used in the undergraduate laboratory of the University of California is discussed. The simple analysis method requires only the solution to a system of four algebraic equations. The experimental apparatus is designed to permit single and four column investigation of air separation. The single column is used to calibrate the models for binary gas separation. Students are able to use the model for developing competing designs for gas separation and optimizing the designs for maximizing the efficiency of separation.
