Abstract
An approximate expression for the power density in a surface acoustic wave is derived which avoids the necessity of an exact numerical solution of the wave equation and associated boundary conditions. Comparisons between available exact solutions and the approximate result for several materials and crystalline orientations show agreement within a factor of two in all cases and much closer in most cases.
