A visual sensory evaluation of the results of two pattern grading methods

A study is presented using sensory evaluation methodology to determine if visual perceptual differences exist between the results of pattern grading methods using traditional and proportional techniques. Three sets of images are selected across the entire size range to emphasize horizontal and vertical proportion and the proportion of details. Results show that neither traditional nor proportional grading maintain the visual effect across the size range, concluding that the goal of pattern grading needs to be redefined to account for the desired visual effect in a variety of size and body variations.
