Abstract

Dissolved oxygen measurements are reported for seven spillway structures in the vicinity of Minneapolis, Minnesota, corresponding to 27 individual surveys. The surveys are taken during the winter months to take advantage of large dissolved oxygen deficits due to upstream ice cover and the high saturation concentration of low water temperatures. Oxygen transfer is observed by measuring dissolved oxygen concentration at various locations upstream and downstream of a particular hydraulic structure. Samples were also taken on the spillway face where possible. These measurements indicate up to 50 percent of the total gas transfer can occur prior to the hydraulic jump on the spillway face, depending on the length of the air entrained flow.
