Abstract

This paper describes a mathematical model which has been derived for describing the process of mold filling with two components during reaction injection molding (RIM) of polyurethane articles. In experiments, a specially designed mold has been used and the mold-filling process was followed by movie photography. It is shown that the pressure rise during filling for the RIM process is low. If the ratio of filling time to the characteristic reaction time, K, is less than 0. 2, the viscosity can be assumed constant during filling. If K is greater than 0. 2 incomplete filling and weld lines may be a problem. The flow front is unstable at high flow rates.
