Abstract

To utilize pultrusion processing for advanced materials and die geometries, it is important to have a good understanding of how process variables (such as line speed, die temperature, resin formulation) affect temperature and cure inside the die. Resin pressure in pultrusion is also important because it is directly related to void content and pulling force. The purpose of this paper is to describe the fundamental physics of pressure and pulling force in pultrusion and then apply these models towards understanding surface defects such as sloughing, surface roughness, and surface shear. The analysis will be used to understand fundamental differences between unsaturated polyester and epoxy pultrusion, and the effect of fiber loading and fillers on pultrusion processing.
