Abstract
Because of the complexity of the problem, computation of stresses and displacements induced by underground excavations must be done numerically. The numerical method outlined in this paper is designed to take advantage of the fact that the complete solution to an elastic problem is determined by the boundary values of stresses and displacements. This effectively reduces a three-dimensional problem to a two-dimensional one and thus makes it possible to study fairly detailed problems economically. Although the method is very versatile it is not intended as a replacement for the well-established finite element technique. In fact, the two methods (or three, including the dynamic relaxation finite different scheme) should be viewed as being complementary: the different methods offer distinct advantages in different situations, and in certain instances a combination of them could be used to build on the strengths of each.
