Analysis of sub 10-nm particles via drift tube ion mobility spectrometry

Abstract

DTIMS is an alternative method of electrical mobility spectrometry to differential mobility analysis, which is well suited for the measurement of particles with time-varying size distributions. We have developed a new DTIMS instrument which is uniquely coupled to a CPC, facilitating measurements of aerosol particles. By measuring DMA selected particles with a wide range of DTIMS operating voltages, an equation linking electrical mobility to arrival time in measurements has been developed. Further, the ability to examine shifts in particle electrical mobility and size due to water vapor uptake has been demonstrated.
