Abstract

Prostate cancer is a biologically diverse disease. The hallmark of the disease is its ability to regress, and ultimately regrow, following testosterone deprivation (hormone therapy). Recent developments have yielded new insights into the biological mechanisms of androgen independent growth. In turn, novel therapies directed at these mechanisms, including adrenal androgens, the insulin-like growth factors and transforming growth factor-beta, are being pursued in clinical trials.
