Abstract
The author discusses the contribution of AI or artificial intelligence (and the broader field of cognitive science) in improving students' capability for learning how to learn, and examines the implications and importance of these considerations for engineering education. After a brief description and history of AI, the concept of learning how to learn is explained. The work then goes on to consider the contributions to metalearning from models of the learner, expert-novice differences, acquisition of expertise, the role of heuristics, and knowledge structure and representation.
