With the exception of a few notable large-scale initiatives, particularly in the 1960s and occasionally since then,2 and the relatively small grants internal to higher education institutions, music education researchers in general have not been subject to the same kinds of funded research opportunities and expectations that exist in the hard sciences, medicine, and numerous other disciplines. However, with the rise of interdisciplinary research and government, philanthropic, and commercial interests in the benefits of arts education, more externally funded opportunities have become available in recent decades. Though still relatively limited and generally unsustained, funding has been offered through entities such as the now-defunct Texaco Foundation, the National Association of Music Merchants, the Dana Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the U.S. Department of Education, among others.
