Abstract

Detection of proteinuria, particularly in apparently healthy persons, raises the question of underlying renal disease. How do clinicians determine the clinical significance of proteinuria? The authors review the three clinical patterns of proteinuria, describe how to quantitate urinary protein, and discuss a diagnostic approach to the asymptomatic patient.
