Automated fluorescence-imaging cytometry for the detection of cervical cancer

Abstract

Accumulating evidence strongly associates human papillomavirus (HPV) infection with the development of cervical cancers. Recent epidemiological studies indicate that the amount of high risk HPV in cervicovaginal epithelial cells may be a risk factor for cervical cancer. A technique which could detect, genotype and quantitate HPV in smears of cervicovaginal epithelial cells would be of major import in assessment of patient clinical status as well as in epidemiological studies relating HPV infection to cervical cancer. The paper presents ongoing development of an Automated Clinical Image Cytometer (ACIC), which can genotype and quantitate the amount of HPV present at a single cell level in cervical PAP smears.
