N2 - Statins (Hypolipidemic Agents) act as an inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl Coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, are the main class of drugs to reduce Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. Statins are the fungal secondary metabolites which selectively inhibit hydroxymethyl glutaryl coenzyme A reductase, the first enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis. Various fungi have been used to produce different types of statins commercially. This review deals with the structure, biosynthesis of statins, fermentative and synthetic production of statins, and application of statins.
