Abstract

Nearly all analyses to date have assumed a perfectly bonded interface. There is question of clinical relevance of these analyses for cemented total joints, the overwhelming majority of those implanted. This paper reports a study in which a fibrous tissue layer is included in an implant finite element model. The goal is to develop methods for incorporating the soft layer in the finite element model and to give an estimate of the effect of such a layer on predicted stress distributions.
