Catecholamines and monoamine oxidase activity in turkeys with high or low blood pressure

Abstract

Following 6 generations of genetic selection for high and low blood pressure turkeys, tissues were assayed for monoamine oxidase and catecholamine. The posterior aorta of hypertensive turkeys showed lower monoamine oxidase activity and greater norepinephrine concentrations than low blood pressure subjects. Norepinephrine administration caused a greater blood pressure elevation in hypertensive turkeys than in low blood pressure ones. The results suggest that the increased blood pressure response to administered norepinephrine in the hypertensive turkey may be due to a decrease in monoamine oxidase activity.
