Abstract

The role of chitosan as a cholesterol lowering agent was discussed. The role played by chitosan in reducing atherosclerotic risk in humans was also highlighted. The mechanism of the cholesterol lowering behavior of chitosan was analyzed. The studies show that an increased excretion of cholesterol, bile acids, and fat in animals, which is consistent with the theory of micellar binding, explains the efficacy of chitosan towards cholesterol lowering. Chitosan greatly increases fecal fat excretion, which suggests its usefulness for promoting weight loss.
