Abstract

The objective of the project described here has been to investigate the feasibility of the chlorination-based process for treating copper-nickel sulfide flotation concentrates from the Duluth gabbro formation. This approach involved studying the operating conditions and defining the operating parameters for the continuous chlorination-selective oxidation of sulfide flotation concentrates. Inherent in this approach was the use of fluidized-bed reactors for conducting the gas-solid reactions and specifically avoiding the formation of molten chlorides. Only after extensive testwork and more complete heat balance and economic analysis will one know whether or not this chlorination-based process will be a viable alternative for sulfide smelting.
