Cholesterol absorption following reversal of the upper and lower halves of the small intestine

Abstract

Reversal of the continuity of jejunal and ileal segments resulted in no change in total cholesterol absorption. Based on this finding and those of a previous study, it has been demonstrated that there does not appear to be an ileal or jejunal site in the small intestine of the rabbit which is specific or selective for cholesterol absorption. It is suggested that utilizing a moderately large oral feeding of crystalline cholesterol (10 mg.) in the rabbit will result in maximum absorption in the distal half of the small intestine regardless of the relative continuity of intestinal segments. Transit time in the small intestine seems to strongly influence quantitative cholesterol absorption.
