Circuit analysis of Watt chain six-bar mechanisms

Abstract

Circuits are distinct ranges of motion of a mechanism that require dissembly of the mechanism to move from one range to another. A Watt chain may have one, two, three, or four possible circuits. Circuits in the Watt chain are affected by the circuits of the two adjoining four-bar chains that compose the linkage and bb the limits of motion that these two chains place on one another. All of the possible circuit configurations of a Watt mechanism are summarized in chart form. The results are suitable for both automated and manual analysis. Examples of circuit analysis of both Watt I and Watt II mechanisms are provided.
