Abstract
When serial dilutions of penicillin G, which is destroyed by staphylococcal penicillinase, were nixed with various dilutions of each of 2 semisynthetic penicillinaseresistant penicillins (such as methicillin and oxacillin). the combined action against 5 strains of staphylococci (of which 4 were resistant to penicillin G) was always at least as good as that of the more active of the mixture. Synergism was not observed, but in some assays the action was significantly less than additive against resistant penicillinase-producing strains. Penicillin in combination with one of the new eemisynthetic. penicillinase-resistant penicillins could therefore be used to initiate therapy of serious staphylococcal infections, until the results of sensitivity tests become available, after which the appropriate type of penicillin should be used.
