Abstract
Rotational rheology measurements are used widely in characterizing polymer melts. For processing application they are less useful because they are usually limited to lower shear rates. However rotational measurements provide information which is not generally available from capillary measurements: zero shear viscosity and normal stresses both of which can be important to polymer structure characterization and in processing. The rotational geometries which are used for polymer melt flow curves are cone and plate, parallel plates and the bicone. This paper presents mathematical equations which have been derived to characterize the cone and plate rheometers and their operations during viscosity measurement of polymer melts. Possibilities and limitations of the method discussed are included.
