Abstract

A methodology to aid in the task of physical database design is described. The methodology provides a multiple level descriptive model for formally expressing logical database problems and their physical solutions and a set of software procedures to aid in the design process. The logical structure and volume of the data and the user processing requirements are input to the design software which interactively generates alternative database schemes, transform user processing requirements into activities on those schemas, produces efficient access paths to support these activities and supports the selection of a database design from among those produced. Output from the software is a database design and an estimate for the operating cost of that design. The software itself is comprised of a combination of heuristic, probabilistic estimation and mathematical optimization procedures.
