Contact and change: and example on the fringes of the Classical world.

The discipline of classical archaeology can make major contributions to the study of contact between societies and of cultural changes stimulated by such contact. An instance of commercial interaction between Greeks at Massalia and central Europeans serves to illustrate the kinds of changes which can occur in contact situations. The relatively rich evidence provided by classical archaeology, including precise chronologies for manufactured objects and supplementary literary documentation, enables us to suggest a model of the processes of change occurring in this context as a result of contact with the Greek world.- Author
