Abstract

2,2,7,7-Tetramethyl-1,2,3,6,7,8-hexahydro-cinnolino[5,4,3-cde]cinnoline (L) was designed as a geometrically rigid tetradentate nitrogen donor for the preparation of 3D coordination polymers. The ligand easily affords complexes with copper(I) iodide (bromide) and X-ray crystal structure analysis revealed a variety of coordination architectures such as 1D chains in CuI{L}·CH 3CN, 2D nets involving copper(I) iodide tetramers in Cu 4I4{L}2·3(NC-(CH2) 4-CN), and 3D channeled trigonal and tetragonal frameworks in Cu 2I2{L}·1.33CH3CN and Cu 2Br2{L}·CH3CN. The structures of the latter compounds involve threefold copper(I) iodide or fourfold copper(I) bromide helices and the tetradentate bridging function of the organic ligand; these are structural prototypes for open hybrid organic/inorganic framework solids.
