N2 - The paper reviews previous research and proposed concepts related to the response of crops to excess soil moisture conditions. The results of both empirical and theoretical studies are presented and evaluated. A conceptual, physically based model for defining the dynamic status of soil moisture, soil air, and soil oxygen in the root zone is proposed.
