Abstract

The purpose of this investigation is to determine basic cryobiophysical parameters for human and hepatoma cells. Each cell type was frozen under carefully controlled conditions and the freezing response observed. The hydraulic permeability for human hepatocytes and its activation energy was measured to be 1.6 (10)-13 m(Pa S)-1 and 2.4 (10)5 J/mol respectively. Internal ice formation parameters for human hepatocyte and hepatoma cells were estimated and compared to those of other species. These cryobiophysical parameters are useful for not only development of cryopreservation protocols but for understanding cell specific freezing characteristics.
