Abstract
Delusions are fixed, false beliefs that can come in many different themes, including paranoid, grandiose, and religious. They can be monothematic or elaborative. They are not shared by other members of a culture and they impair function largely through elevated levels of distress and preoccupation, as well as often inducing irrational and illogical behaviors. They can be the result of subtle neurocognitive impairment or lesions to particular brain areas. They are most often treated by antipsychotics, but certain delusions respond well to psychotherapeutic intervention.
