Abstract

The Tandem Van de Graaff Accelerator of the University of Minnesota is described in terms of its application and advantages in determining the extent of macrosegregation in cast steel billets. Point analyses 1-mm or larger in diameter for all elements down to helium in the periodic table can be taken to a depth of 1-mm without destroying the surface being analyzed. Therefore, microscopy of the same area can be correlated with the analyses. The alternative is to analyze drilling samples which then have to be produced in a solution form before analysis can be conducted by instrumental chemical analysis techniques.
