Abstract

This paper presents research on the development of digital collages and investigations into the cognitive efforts of graphic designers. The research venue was an upper level undergraduate course in computer graphics. Work in the course focused on the use of digital imaging software (Adobe Photoshop) and the creation, manipulation, use and understanding of images. Graphic design students manipulated images to address a series of complex topics. This study began with a hypothesis: computers may extend our cognitive abilities, inspired at least in part by the work of McLuhan.
