DUCTILE-BRITTLE TRANSITION IN IRON ALLOYS.

Abstract

Competing effects of Si additions on solid-solution softening and cleavage strength result in a minimum on ductile-brittle transition temperature (T(DBTT)), while the cooperative effect of Ni additions on both parameters causes a continual decrease in T(TDBTT). A theoretical model of T(DBTT) is proposed in terms of thermally-activated flow, the cleavage fracture stress and the plastic constraint factor. The Dorn-Rajnak theory of double-kink nucleation is shown to be a consistent model for representing the thermally-activated flow in these alloys.
