Abstract

We have treated a number of experimental configurations which are illustrative of the richness and complexity of the phenomena in the field known as nonequilibrium superconductivity. We have reviewed the theory emphasizing physical models rather than formal mathematical development. The chapter has been focussed strongly on the use of the AC Josephson effect to produce and to probe the dynamics of the order parameter. This approach allows for the study of high-frequency dynamics through measurement of DC current-voltage characteristics. Our detailed discussion has focussed on investigations of the pair-field susceptibility, studied using tunneling junctions, and experiments with phase-slip centers, and microbridges.
