Abstract

The earthquake response of r/c frame structures with columns flexurally weaker than beams (SBWC) is investigated in a combined experimental and analytical study. Two small-scale models, comprising parallel nine-story, three-bay frames, were constructed and tested on an earthquake simulator. Accelerations and displacements were measured at each level. A lumped parameter MDOF model is presented and used to interpret observed test specimen response. The model is subsequently used in a parametric study of earthquake response of SBWC frames. Variables in the study are: ground motion, frame profile, and frame strength.
