Abstract

The effects of viscous dissipation on the flow of polymer melts in capillary dies are examined. Shear heating is shown to have a significant effect on capillary viscometry data. The data is found to be dependent on capillary geometry due to shear heating effects. A mathematical model of the capillary flow is presented. The numerical solution gives a reasonable agreement with temperature rises measured using an IR pyrometer.
