Abstract

France conducted underground nuclear tests on the atolls of Mururoa and Fangataufa in French Polynesia during the period from 1975 to 1996. Destabilization of the submarine slopes of the atolls, on the ocean side, appears to be a consequence of the testing. Numerical modeling was conducted to assess: (1) the stability of the atoll slopes under static and dynamic loading conditions, and (2) to what extent nuclear testing has affected the process of natural slope collapse.
