Evidence for 1μm size instabilities in hydrogen-assisted cracking of Fe‒3%Si crystals

Abstract

Groups of AE events were detected for hydrogen-assisted slow crack growth in an Fe-3%Si single crystal. Each group of events can be correlated to a 1μm size advance of the entire crack front which is accomplished by many microcracking events. The time interval between each group of events is about 12 seconds which is the secondary incubation time for the discontinuous crack advance.
