Abstract
In free parison blow molding the development of parison shape appears to be the most critical step in proper polymer design. At least three parison shape factors can be related to final bottle properties: wall thickness swell which controls bottle weight, parison diameter swell which controls the amount of flash or trim and parison sagging which leads to nonuniform wall thickness. Most previous studies have attempted to correlate steady shear or linear viscoelastic properties to parison behavior. In the study reported in this paper, extensional measurements on three similar high density blow molding polyethylenes are examined. Study materials, apparatus and results are discussed.
