Abstract

The fiber transmission penalties due to nonlinearity and ASE noise resulting from channel drop-add power transients in a chain of 10-20 erbium doped fiber amplifiers with as many as 32 WDM channels are analyzed. The transient penalties depend upon the data rate, number of channels, and the fiber type. The worst case scenario with N-1 drop-add channels in an N channel system is investigated.
