Abstract

• A filter test system was setup to evaluate the loading behavior of flat filter media when challenged with aerosols with bi-modal distribution. • The coarse mode aerosol was generated by dispersing Arizona Road Dust with an ejection pump. The fine mode aerosol was generated by mechanical aerosolization, evaporation-condensation, or combustion methods to produce aerosols with different structures. • It has been confirmed that the filter pressure drop evolution behavior is dominated by fine particle. A small amount of fine particles can substantially increase the pressure drop. • The morphology of fine particles was found to have considerable effect on filter loading behavior.
