N2 - Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), founded in 1910 by the US Forest Services, has contributed significantly since its inception in wood research for various segments of the US' Military. During World War I (WW I), FPL conducted special courses for military and civilian personnel of various department of the military, which involves intensive training in the construction and testing of packages and greatly improved inspection services. The US Army has successfully recycled more than 4,700 cubic meters of lumber and timber from two large military industrial buildings in cooperation with FPL. The researchers at the FPL are also studying methods to manufacture glued-laminated live oak timbers to serve as replacement timbers for deteriorated members in the Old Ironside, the oldest floating commissioned ship in the world and part of the US Navy.
