Abstract

Neutrons sent at grazing incidence on imperfect multilayers are not only reflected and refracted, but also partially scattered both in and out of the reflection plane by the lateral dishomogeneities. The forward scattering in the reflection plane has distinctive characteristics. A first series of maxima is caused by incoherent scattering from the dishomogeneities. A second series is due to diffraction from the limited crystallites into which the sample is parcelled. The recognition of such topology opens the door to a better understanding of the scattered intensities in terms of the size of the lateral dishomogeneities, their correlation and their depth in film. Parallel phenomenology is expected for X-rays.
