Abstract

This paper describes some results of a study of the influence of atmospheric dilution and aging on the nature of diesel aerosols. Samples were obtained from diesel exhaust plumes from both stationary and mobile sources. Continuous measurements of oxides of nitrogen, light scattering, and condensation nuclei were made. A bag sampler was used for intermittent size distribution determinations using an electrical aerosol analyzer (EAA) and an optical particle counter (OPC). Filter samples were collected for chemical analysis and Ames testing. Low volume filter samples were collected to determine light adsorption cross sections using the integrating plate method. All filter samples were collected with a 0. 9 mu m aerodynamic diameter cut-size impactor upstream of the filter. Study results are reported.
